We love feedback! Sony does a good job of pushing regular updates to the PlayStation 4 family. The majority of the time, you can count on your PlayStation to download any system updates automatically, which is nice. But if an update ever fails, you might find yourself in a situation where your PS4 is stuck - never being able to successfully update to latest system software. This may prevent you from playing online with friends, etc. This guide will help you troubleshoot difficulties with installing an update.

Fans in one Reddit thread have been trying to find a correlation between which edition PS4s are having issues , but it seems like there isn't any PS4 model that's having more trouble than others and that it's random for which consoles might struggle with the update.

It's also worth noting that many console owners haven't had any issues with the 9. It might not be ideal, but fans wanting to play it safe might want to wait on installing the 9. There hasn't been any official word from the company on when fans might expect a fix, but hopefully, one comes soon. That said, it seems like most PS4 consoles are fine following the update, so issues aren't a guarantee, but look out for any abnormalities with the system when using it for the first time after the update has been installed.

The thought of a bricked console is definitely a scary one as getting new hardware is pretty tricky right now. It's no secret that stock for the PS5 and Xbox Series X has been fleeting at best as a result of the ongoing chip shortage , but consoles like the PS4 and Xbox One are also hard to find. There are 2 ways to update your PlayStation 4. Updating online over the Internet. Updating using a USB drive to download the update file on your computer, then connecting it to your PlayStation.

Press the PS logo button on your controller. Select Network. Select Test Internet Connection. The test should only take a few moments. Make sure all 3 say Successful. From the function screen, select Settings. The system will now check for an update over the internet. If no update is available, you will get the message " The latest version of the system software is already installed.

You may now back out of this screen and use your PlayStation. When the download is complete, a notification message is displayed in the upper left corner of the function screen. Select Notifications. Select Downloads. Once downloaded, select the System Software update to perform the installation. Follow any on screen prompts. The system may reboot to complete the install. Sometimes, it's easier to perform the update when it's already downloaded. You can use your computer and a USB drive to download the update, then update your PlayStation 4 that way.

Select Download Update. If you are given the option, save this file directly to your USB drive.
